The point of this article is for one to notice that one should be grateful for what they have in their life. Tim had support and love from his lovers Evan and Ron, who cared for each other in different ways than others might. In the end, Tim teaches me to appreciate the good and say how I feel. Tim didn't get to do that. He never told Ron and Evan that he loved them and the time that they spent together before he drifted away from them.
https://www.buzzfeed.com/timmurphywriter/what-i-learned-about-love-while-getting-high?utm_term=.mcv9AkzXN#.mqbVGQXnP Jackie Cruz- better known as "Flaca" from hit Netflix series "Orange is the New Black" is more than an actor, but also an inspirational music artist. Last year, she released a music tribute in honor of the beautiful Selena Quintanilla by covering her famous song "Como La Flor". What Jackie Cruz and I have in common is that Selena is both one of our most influential Latina artists ever. I remember growing up listening to my mother playing this song every morning as she made my siblings and I breakfast. I loved to hear the beautiful melody and as I grew older and learned the meaning of this song.. I realized how strong and loving Selena is. She expressed her love for her guy though he has hurt her.. she wishes nothing but the best for him. The video consists of the life of Jackie and her lover who live happy lives playing music and making art. Though it does not end well, just like Selena, Jackie hopes that in the end he's happy. Jackie serves Selena well with this wonderful cover. Jackie said to Billboard mag, "Her music still lives on. I picked that song because it just reminds me a lot of a relationship I had in the past and it's something I really connect to," she said. "The song is about losing a love and you're still happy for him even though he found happiness with someone else." Being Dominican myself, it's great to see a powerful and inspiring artist/actress pay tribute to one of the most influential Latinas to make music. Jackie reminds us Latinas that we are strong, talented, and capable of anything. Solange just came out with her new album titled "A Seat at the Table". A song that spoke out to me is called "Don't Touch My Hair". She sends a message about hair that's saying let others do what they want to their hair. A person should not be judged or criticized by the way they style their hair. She says "Don't touch my hair, when it's the feeling I wear". I find this so powerful because her hair is who she is. The kinky curls on my head, the long locks on a friend... they make us who we are. Amandla Stenberg speaks about the mentality surrounding black femininity and the double standards of black female sexuality. White women are praised for attempting to alter their bodies while black women are suppressed for having them naturally.
In the Netflix show "The Get Down" a series about the birth of Hip-Hop in New York following a group of friends and love along the way, the steamy kiss scene between Jaden Smith's "Dizzee" and his new friend Thor explored an important time in the 70s. In the scene, they are at a a club with upbeat music, drag queens singing and dancing on stage, and people of all sexual orientations having a good time. The 70's were a time of openness and gender identity. This was a big deal for the LGBTQ community. I love this scene in the show because it shows letting go of society's standards and just vibing with someone you have a good time with no matter what gender they are. Though some may conceive this scene as portraying homosexuality, throughout their kiss you get other shots of men and women kissing and a breast being caressed. I see this scene as saying "love is love". This scene explored some of the history and culture of the LGBTQ community which is a very big deal! |
Kanye west's multiracial requestMany Kanye West fans (and/or haters) had a lot to say about his casting call that he tweeted two days ago. He posted an image that specified he wanted multiracial models only which caused a stir.
Kanye's "multiracial women only" creates controversy in the modeling industry due to black women being underrepresented. Though statistics prove that the representation of black women in the fashion industry is increasing, black women are still severely underrepresented. Only 8 percent of black women walked the runways in the 2015 Fashion Week. Some assume he doesn't want darker skinned women to model is clothes line. One girl protested on the streets of New York who wrote on her body "They want black features not black girls!" Kanye West is unfairly excluding darker women and is looking for lighter women.
On the other hand, many can argue that Kanye has a vision and he should just fulfill it. Some believe that the tweet was taken out of context and that he was not trying to be racist. I believe that if the wording was different, like "multiracial women preferred" rather than ONLY, then men and women would not have seen this as so offensive. |
